Colorectal Cancer Awareness Virtual Run 2022 is the first running event organised jointly by the Clinical Oncology department (University of Malaya), Colorectal Surgery division (Dept of Surgery - UM) and the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons.

This event aims to raise awareness about colorectal cancer in Malaysia. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in Malaysia, just after breast cancer. This virtual run is organised in March in conjunction with the colorectal cancer awareness month. It will be launched on 4th March 2022 during the 'Coloproctology 2022', the 20th Annual Scientific Congress of the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons (MSCRS).

This event will include 4 categories: 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km. Runners are allowed to complete the run one-off or cumulatively up to 5 splits. Top 5 runners of each category will be rewarded with RM50 Grab voucher. Every successful submission will also be eligible for a lucky draw. There will be 20 lucky draw winners - each winner will be getting RM30 Grab voucher.

Facts about Colorectal Cancer

  1. Colorectal Cancer is the most common cancer in Malaysian men, and second most common among Malaysian women.
  2. 3 in 4 individuals who develop Colorectal Cancer present with late-stage disease.
  3. All of us have a 6% lifetime chance of developing Colorectal Cancer.
  4. Colorectal cancer is most common among Malaysian Chinese followed by Malays and Indians.
  5. Risk of developing Colorectal Cancer increases with age and peaks at the age of 70.
  6. Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer include but are not limited to, having a change in bowel habits, passing of blood in stools, abdominal pain, feeling of incomplete bowel emptying, weight loss and fatigue.
  7. Colorectal Cancer usually develops in the bowels from small growths called polyps.
  8. Polyps will take years to develop into Colorectal Cancer and hence it can be detected early with screening by either testing the stools for blood or performing a colonoscopy.
  9. Screening for Colorectal Cancer is recommended for the population between the ages of 50 till 75.
  10. Colorectal Cancer has good outcome if detected and treated at an early stage with survival rates of 91% after 5 years

  • Participants may run, jog or walk anywhere that is safe, within the area permitted by National Security Council, any time from 4th March 2022 until 31st March 2022.
  • Participants need to track their activity using any running applications (Strava, Garmin, Fitbit, Runkeeper, etc) and submit a screen shot of tracking device as proof of distance, If you are using a treadmill, you need to upload a picture of your treadmill screen that shows the distance and time taken for activity done as proof of distance.
  • Participants can split the distance up to 5 times as long as the accumulated distance reach the run category chosen. There will be no cut off time.
  • You may upload your submission and screen shot at any time during the race period (4th March 2022 until 31st March 2022 at 12am). If participants are unable to submit the result before end of 31st March 2022, they will be considered as disqualified and considered as Did Not Start (DNS) at the Leaderboard. You can submit your results at any time before the submission closing date. Late submission will not be entertained.
  • e-Certificate will only be issued to participants who completed their run.
  • If you run further than the distance required for your category, Leaderboard will record your actual time but we will only capture the distance of your category.

Terms & Conditions

  1. Colorectal Cancer Awareness Virtual Run 2022 is jointly organised by Clinical Oncology Department (University of Malaya), Colorectal Surgery Division (Dept of Surgery - UM) and the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons
    . It is open to everyone residing in Malaysia.
  2. In order to fight against COVID-19 infection, all participants need to obey the current Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by Malaysian National Security Council (MKN) on outdoor exercises.
  3. All participants warrant to provide true, accurate, current and complete personal information during registration.
  4. The confirmation of participation is only valid with the confirmed payment of the required fee.
  5. Upon successful payment, a confirmation slip will be sent to the participant’s registered email address with an e-bib number. If such confirmation slip is not received within 7 working days from the successful registration date, the participants should contact the Organizer.
  6. After successful registration, no change of details will be permitted.
  7. All entries are NOT TRANSFERABLE, NOT REFUNDABLE AND NOT DEFERRABLE.

  12. Participants must be certified fit to participate in this event The organiser shall not be liable for any accident, injuries or mishap that happen in participating the Virtual Run event.
  13. All participants under the age of 18 need parental consent during registration.
  14. Registration fees will be charged in Malaysian Ringgit (RM).
  15. The Organiser may contact the Participants at any time by email or text message. Any notice sent to the email address registered with the Organiser shall be considered received by the Participants, if the Participants provide any information that is inaccurate, untrue, not current or incomplete, or the Organiser has right to suspect that such information is inaccurate, untrue, not current or incomplete, the Organiser may suspend or terminate the Participants’ registration and fees will not be refunded.
  16. The Organiser has the rights to amend the Terms & Conditions at any time at its sole discretion without any prior notice.
